Thirty four years ago today 14 women were murdered at the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal in a anti-women mass shooting also known as the Montreal Massacre. This is still Canada's most deadly shooting. The names of the 14 massacre victims were Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault and Annie Turcotte.
They were targeted because they were women.
The event led to larger debates about violence against women and stricter gun control laws in Canada.
Today we remember those 14 women and those others who have lost their lives to femicide.
We gathered in downtown Alliston today to create community awareness about this day. Thank you all of those who came out and stood with us and to those who stopped by to learn more.
